Tisch Hospital Unveils Its New Critical Care Unit

For patient and caregiver alike, an intensive care unit (ICU) lives up to its name every minute of every day. An ICU houses patients who typically arrive with a severe respiratory problem, heart failure, an ischemic heart disorder, sepsis, or some other life-threatening illness. It’s not uncommon for such complex conditions to require more than a dozen medications, including some of the most advanced drugs available.

On May 19, the first patients were wheeled into NYU Langone Medical Center’s new Intensive Care Unit—or Critical Care Unit, as it’s now called—a state-of-the-art 18-bed unit that occupies the west wing of Tisch Hospital’s 15th floor. Patient rooms are private, and spacious enough for the entire healthcare team to work efficiently and for families to visit any time of day or night....
