Cardiovascular Care Expands in Scope and Scale

New Programs Enhance Medical Center’s Expertise in Cardiac Surgery

 

In one of the sixth-floor ORs at NYU Langone Medical Center’s Tisch Hospital, Ralph Mosca, MD, professor of cardiothoracic surgery, is about to demonstrate why he’s one of the nation’s top pediatric cardiac surgeons. A three-month-old boy with several severe heart defects has been anesthetized and placed on a cardiopulmonary bypass machine, which takes over the heart’s job of circulating blood through the infant’s body.

Standing over his six-pound patient, Dr. Mosca and his team begin working on the now-empty heart. First, the major blood vessels, which are attached to the wrong chambers, must be reassembled. Next, a large hole in the heart has to be patched. Finally, an underdeveloped aortic arch has to be reshaped.
