From the Dean & CEO As you can see on our front page, we have received some extraordinary gifts and grants over the past few months that make us immensely proud—and grateful. But what excites me most about the generosity of individuals like Trustee Fiona Druckenmiller and her husband, Stanley, and the award of a $29.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, is how it affects our ability to achieve our vision. Gifts and grants like these provide the means for us to deliver world-class patient care, pursue research that has the potential to transform the way disease is diagnosed and treated, and to educate future generations of physicians. They also allow us to provide state-of-the-art care environments, such as the recently opened Elly Hammerman Inpatient Pediatrics Unit at our Hospital for Joint Diseases, the Jean and David Blechman Cardiac and Vascular Center, and modern, well-equipped lab space, as you will see on page 4. At the start of the new academic year, we welcomed the class of 2013 to NYU School of Medicine and launched them on their journey with the White Coat Ceremony. While no one knows the exact genesis of doctors wearing white coats, donning the white coat for the first time is a time-honored and inspiring tradition that anchors new students to the reasons they are here. The passionate energy of each and every member of our community is palpable as you walk the halls. Join us as we forge ahead.
